Get To Know...
Davison/Coleman

City and state you grew up in:
Lynn Davison: I grew up in Queens, NY. Just watch any episode of “The Nanny” and you’ll get the idea...
Cole Coleman: I grew up in Hermosa Beach, CA which is in the South Bay area of Los Angeles. It truly is a beach community. As a kid growing up there, life revolved around surfing, bike riding, hanging out with your buds at the beach or the pier, that sort of thing.
City and state you live in now:
Lynn Davison: Los Angeles, CA. I found the relaxed California lifestyle helped to neutralize the more intense aspects of growing up in NY, although I miss the people there. Now I’m a ‘laid back’ workaholic.
Cole Coleman: Still here in Los Angeles, CA though now I’m based out of The Valley in the Studio City, Sherman Oaks area.
First instrument:
Lynn Davison: I started playing piano at age three and studied classical music at the High School of Performing Arts in NY. I even got to see my homeroom teacher in the movie “Fame.”
Cole Coleman: Well, as far back as I can remember there’s always been a guitar for me to pluck around on – as my older brother also plays guitar. But, the first instrument I picked up to purposely learn was the trumpet. I was about ten years old and my school had a brass orchestra of sorts – and I felt I just had to be involved with it.
Instruments you currently play:
Lynn Davison: I enjoy playing acoustic piano at home for myself… it’s an incredible emotional outlet for me. But for any kind or recording or performing I use various types of electronic keyboards. I’ve been known to dabble with guitar but it still feels unnatural to me -- those bar chords are a bitch!!
Cole Coleman: I play acoustic and electric guitar in many styles including rock, pop, sub-modern, alternative, classical,
fingerstyle, and more if called upon. I also play the Laud which is a medieval guitar-like instrument and the featured instrument on our album
Forward Motion, and I play keyboards a little.
First performance:
Lynn Davison: I sang “Oh Marie” accapella in Italian when I was two years old at a family wedding. It was a hit!
Cole Coleman: There was an acoustic group that performed as part of the “Youth Mass” at the church I was brought up in. Just like with the brass band a couple years before, I felt I just had to be a part of it. I was twelve years old which was a bit young for them; but fortunately, they let me join and so – my first performance in front of an audience was in front of a congregation of about one-thousand people. My first performance in front of the general public came a little later. In High School, when I was fourteen, I put together a band with some buds and our first gig was at the Manhattan Beach Fair in front of around two-thousand people.
Last book you read:
Lynn Davison: “The Biology of Belief” by Bruce Lipton, Ph.D. He’s a cellular biologist who provides evidence for how our belief systems affect our physiology – fascinating stuff!!
Cole Coleman: “Psychic Warrior” by David Morehouse. It’s based on his own life’s story and experience as a member of a super-clandestine CIA espionage team. Whether you believe it or not – wow! What a story! But, I don’t read much for recreation. When I read, it’s usually a technical manual for a software program I’m using.
Favorite movie:
Lynn Davison: OK, I admit, it’s still The Wizard of Oz. There’s never been a film with a more profound message conveyed in a more creative way (in my opinion). I love a good comedy too, like
Austin Powers, Spinal Tap, and Young Frankenstein.
Cole Coleman: Oh, wow… I can’t bring it down to just one. But, movies I often think of as being top of the crop are
It’s A Wonderful Life, The Man Who Would Be King, Spartacus,
The Lord of the Rings. I like movies that make you ponder like By Dawn’s Early
Light, Blade Runner, The Day After Tomorrow, What Dreams May
Come, Pleasantville. And movies I can still have fun with are The Good, the Bad , and the
Ugly, Aliens, Back To The Future, Star Wars, Forrest
Gump, Young Frankenstein, and Gene Wilder had another very funny flick called
The Frisco Kid.
Song you wish you had written:
Lynn Davison: Boy, that’s a tough question because people write from their own unique experiences and perceptions. For classic songwriting, “God Bless the Child” by
Billie Holiday is beautiful melodically and in its message. Also, “This Masquerade” which I loved by
Leon Russell even before George Benson made it popular, and the Beatles “Here, There and Everywhere”… timeless works.
Cole Coleman: There have been a lot of great songs. One song that comes to mind that I might have written something similar too, given my overall style, and wish I had is “Iris” by the
Goo Goo Dolls. And, there’s several songs I’ve gotten ideas for and then forgotten before I could solidify them. Those I wish I’d written!
Favorite song:
Lynn Davison: There are far too many!! Alanis Morissette’s “All I Really Want” is brilliant; lyrically insightful, melodically outstanding and one of the most stylistically unique songs I’ve ever heard. I like quirky stuff like the
B52’s “Love Shack,” “Twisted” by Lambert Hendricks and Ross (re-made by
Joni Mitchell) and “Shaker Song” by Manhattan Transfer.
Cole Coleman: I couldn’t call one song my favorite. Songs are snapshots of a moment or a mood, a sentiment, thought, or experience. They are the pigmentation of the paintings of our lives – and I like a lot of
colours. As a writer, my favorite song is the one I haven’t written yet.
Favorite TV show:
Lynn Davison: I don’t watch much TV and when I do, it’s usually to catch up on news or watch a movie. I’m more into talk radio.
Cole Coleman: Haha… again with the favorites! Just like songs, shows are momentary and finite and I like a variety. I could say that I have favorite channels. I like the Sci-Fi channel a lot, History, Discovery, Science. So, if I am watching TV, it’s usually a great Sci-Fi show like
The Outer Limits, or perhaps a show explaining how we are detecting planets in other solar systems, or a show examining the city of Troy or Rome.
Three people (alive or dead) you would want to have dinner with:
Lynn Davison: Carl Jung, Tracey Ullman, and Bill Clinton.
Cole Coleman: Mark Twain, Leonardo da Vinci, and an alien from another planet.
Favorite holiday:
Lynn Davison: I’m not that big on holidays, but I guess I’d have to say Christmas, or at least the spirit of Christmas before it became a vehicle for consumerism. The holiday traditions are really beautiful.
Cole Coleman: Yuletide. It’s the season that most people call Christmas. The season and it’s traditions along with all the décor and feasting is really Yule. But, one of the early popes moved the birthday of Jesus of Nazareth to the 25th of December, which was also the date of a Roman holiday, as a promotion for Christianity. The idea was that you could join the church and still have your Winter partying! So, Yule got taken over by Christianity as it became popular. It’s really rather sad because Yule – is a fun, warm, lovely celebration, the one Holiday that everyone could share in and celebrate without religion mucking it up.
Three CD’s you can’t live without:
Lynn Davison: Chick Corea’s “Light as a Feather,” Eberhart
Weber’s “Silent Feet,” and my home-made compilation CD of favorite ‘60s and 70’s tunes, of which the contents are a secret.
Cole Coleman: Our own CD Forward Motion is one. It’s a unique and lovely CD and the only one I use my Laud on nearly exclusively – and I’m pleased with that. Next, I’ll have to agree with Lynn and go for a compilation of all my favorite artists – as there are just so many wonderful and talented people I like to listen too like:
Yes, Peter Gabriel, The Cure, Imogen Heap, Aphex
Twin, Portishead, Delerium, NIN, Lifehouse, Dishwalla,
Tool, and lots more. The third CD is the one I haven’t completed yet; because, I have to have something to work towards and it’s a vision of what’s next musically that I can’t live without.
Favorite American City:
Lynn Davison: I’d probably say LA because of the variety. You can hit the beach, mountains, or desert inside of two hours and a great Thai lunch or yoga class is never more than a few blocks away.
Cole Coleman: After consideration, I have to say as well that Los Angeles is my favorite American city to live in and for nearly all the same reasons. The climate is so pleasant all year round – even in the depths of an LA winter or storms. And, it’s amazing that there are so many different environments here. There are also national and international artists appearing nearly nightly, major stage productions, and more. However, New York is my favorite American city to visit.
Your most recent project:
Lynn Davison: I also teach psychology, and have just begun writing a book about how our belief systems are the basis for our emotional lives. More to come…
Cole Coleman: Rebuilding my computer-based studio. I’m still in the midst of it right now. But, I’ve nearly got it all sorted out with new gear, new software, new sound library’s. Then, it’s on to new music for us and experimenting in general.
Message to the world:
Lynn Davison: We’re all part of the human race. Let’s start acting like it!!!
Cole Coleman: One World, One People, Free. I know that’s over-simplifying a complex process – but we’ve got to work towards it if we’re going to survive.
