MTV VMAs Face Down Hurricane Katrina
August 26, 2005

With Hurricane Katrina currently hitting Florida, the MTV Video Music Awards and its surrounding ceremonies are caught right in its path. A number of weekend events at Miami's Surfcomber Hotel (renamed "Hotel MTV") have already been cancelled, including listening parties involving Big Boi of OutKast and Ricky Martin. Saturday's events - as of now - are still scheduled to happen. Outdoor parties and filming locations have also been affected by the weather, along with travel plans for artists making their way to Miami.

“The show is going on 100 percent Sunday night,” MTV spokesman Graham James told The Hollywood Reporter. “We have a ton of contingency plans in place for everything from light rain to lightning to a full-on storm. We’re just rolling with it. We’re watching it carefully hour by hour.”

In other VMA news, MTV's online broadband channel, MTV Overdrive, will feature expanded, bonus coverage of the show. Viewers will also be able to watch the awards show on-demand on the Web site for the next month. The VMAs air live on MTV this Sunday, August 28 at 8 p.m., with the pre-show kicking things off at 6 p.m.
