| Kanye Lashes Out At Bush On Telethon, NBC Responds |

If you watched NBC's Hurricane Katrina relief telethon on Friday night, then you probably took notice of Kanye West's unscripted comments and criticisms about the government's response to the disaster. While on screen with actor Mike Myers, West spoke his mind about the media coverage of the tragedy, saying, "I hate the way they portray us in the media. If you see a black family, it says they're looting. See a white family, it says they're looking for food." He also said that America was set up "to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off as slow as possible," and then said "George Bush doesn't care about black people" just before the camera cut away to comedian Chris Tucker.
The show was hosted by Matt Lauer and aired live on the East Coast on NBC, MSNBC, CNBC and Pax. NBC pulled the comments from its West Coast broadcast and issued this statement after the show: "Tonight's telecast was a live television event wrought with emotion. Kanye West departed from the scripted comments that were prepared for him and his opinions in no way represent the views of the networks. It would be most unfortunate if the efforts of the artists who participated tonight and the generosity of millions of Americans who are helping those in need are overshadowed by one person's opinion."
The telethon included 18 presenters in all and featured performances by Harry Connick Jr., Wynton Marsalis, Aaron Neville, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.
