U2 have always supported and promoted fellow artists they are fans of, and given credit to peers who have inspired them over the years. Bono tells MTV News that rappers such as Kanye West and Jay-Z were among his influences for No Line On The Horizon. From 'Ye, Bono says he took "Respect for the text, seriously, because we're musical [and] we come out of improvisations, and that's how we write songs. The melodies come out of those improvisations, and then eventually, I try to put into words what the music is telling me."
"This is similar for Jay-Z. He just zones in on the text and he hangs onto the text, the words. That's his life," Bono continued. "I learned that my melodies — because they were more operatic — my melodies were spoiling my chances to use a certain vocabulary."
Black Eyed Pea will.i.am also joined U2 in the studio for No Line On The Horizon, and is credited with additional production and keyboards on a few tracks. Bono told MTV that will is "a very important voice... someone to watch." "He's amazing, 'cause he sits at the Pro Tools and punches buttons for an hour," bassist Adam Clayton added. "And at the end of the hour, you've got something that sounds great."
Last night, during FMQB Productions's 3 Nights Live broadcast special, the band namechecked The Killers, Kings Of Leon and Fleet Foxes as some of their current favorites. U2 discussed the new record with host Shirley Manson live from Los Angeles and played tracks from No Line On The Horizon.
Tonight is night two of U2 3 Nights Live, coming from Chicago, where the band will take over the airwaves of stations across the country for one hour, playing whatever they want.
As announced yesterday, U2 has revealed initial dates for their "U2 360" world tour.
