Dennis McNally
Announced As Keynote

Larry Wilson - Keynote Speaker

Dennis McNally is best known for his work as the Grateful Dead’s biographer and publicist, working with the band during the period it evolved from a ’60s counter-culture act playing the usual mix of theaters, arenas and stadiums, to spending a decade as the highest-grossing touring act in the country with a subculture all its own. But it is his work as an author – who stumbled into the Dead’s world by chasing his dreams as a historian – that make his story and career truly compelling.

As a doctoral candidate in History during the ’70s, McNally thought it would be interesting to catalog U.S. history in the second half of the 20th century through the eyes of cultural icons in the arts. That resulted in his doctoral thesis about the ’50s through a biography of Beat poet Jack Kerouac, which is still in publication today as the book Desolate Angel. Already a Dead Head, McNally took his brand new doctorate and headed to San Francisco to try to wheedle his way into doing a biography of the Dead as the touchstone for the ’60s. And wheedle he did.

It turns out that Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia, who was also a voracious reader, had already read Desolate Angel and upon meeting McNally thought he would be the perfect person for the job of Dead biographer. Within three years the book was on hold, as McNally also ascended to the role of Dead publicist, a job he held for years after Garcia’s death in 1995.

Seven years after Jerry Garcia passed away, the long-awaited biography, A Long Strange Trip, was published to great acclaim. McNally then tackled his next project, On Highway 61, which looks at the evolution of cultural freedom in America, starting with Henry David Thoreau and ending with Bob Dylan, touching on the influence of Mark Twain, Robert Johnson, Miles Davis, Ahmet Ertegun and many, many more along the way. Highway 61 was released late last year and is currently in its second pressing.

FMQB welcomes Dennis McNally as the subject of the Keynote Interview at the FMQB Triple A Conference, Wednesday, August 5 at 4 p.m. Join Dennis as he talks with WFUV/New York PD Rita Houston about his career as a music publicist and author, including maybe even a Grateful Dead story or two.
