Irish music video website MUZU.TV has inked a licensing deal with Merlin, the world's largest agency representing independent labels, giving the site access to countless artists' videos. The agreement is most notable because Merlin has not signed a deal with YouTube, MySpace or any other music video site yet, according to Reuters.
Muzu, which pays artists through ad revenue when their videos are streamed, already has deals with place with the four major labels.
Merlin CEO Charles Caldas told Reuters that his agency recognized the value of Muzu's ability to pay artists. "Independent labels have found many ways to monetize their audio content but there have been very few outlets that repay the investment that it takes to create video content," he said in an interview. "So having an outlet that not only allows you to find a commercial way to showcase your video but also is helping and enabling you to digitize content that you might not otherwise is a really valuable opportunity for any label."
Artists signed to labels affiliated with Merlin include Radiohead, The White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand, Adele and many more.
