 Yeah Yeah Yeahs

After receiving critical acclaim for 2003's full-length debut, Fever To Tell, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are poised to drop the follow-up sometime next year. However, the songs' themes may surprise fans used to Karen O's sexually-charged lyrics. According to producer Squeak E. Clean (aka Sam Spiegel aka director Spike Jonze's brother), the new album is based around the life and times of Karen's pet cat. Seriously.Due tentatively in March, the album is named after the singer's cat Coco Beware, a name that is likely a nod to parrot-toting 1980s wrestler Koko B. Ware. The recording was done through much of the first half of 2005, but the concept came into focus after Karen O and "Maps" director Patrick Daughters visited South America and returned with a new friend. "The whole album is pretty much about this cat's journey from Chile to New York," Clean told MTV.com. "Each track tells the story of the [cat's life]. So it starts with Coco's birth, to when they found Coco, and continues." He explained that she "approaches [the narrative] in a surreal way. It's kind of a metaphorical story."
As for the music, Clean told MTV.com, "It's a lot different from the last Yeah Yeah Yeahs record. Those guys did a lot of growing both musically and personally. The album is much more spiritual and much more mature than their last album. There's still some old Yeah Yeah Yeahs [flavor] in there — it definitely rocks really hard — but there's more songs. [It has] real, beautiful songs, and Karen sings beautifully."
The band is also allowing their fans to design some of the artwork for Coco Beware. The contest asks fans to design a flag that is inspired by "the symbolic essence that you have vibed off us." The winning flag will appear in the artwork for the new record, and the band promises to bring it on tour with them next year. All the details can be found here.
According to Clean, Karen O has also been working on her first solo album, though he says the project is being kept top-secret and under wraps. He did say that it would feature a number of "superstar guests" and likely won't see the light of day until 2007 at the earliest.
