As alluded to by FMQB last week, CBS Radio's full transition to Free-FM in New York City was announced today that WXRK (K-Rock) will change its call letters to WFNY-FM, effective January 1, 2006.
As previously announced, the CBS Radio station will move to a predominately Talk format to coincide with the launch of David Lee Roth’s new morning show beginning January 3, 2006.
"92.3 Free-FM is undergoing a major transition to the industry’s newest format," said 92.3 Free-FM VP/GM Tom Chiusano. "We’re thrilled with the outstanding lineup of talent that we’ve assembled and look forward to discussions that entertain, and engage the audience."
Added Chiusano, "Music has always played a central role on 92.3 and we are proud to continue our heritage as one of the county’s best rock stations."
92.3 Free-FM will broadcast "Free Rock Weekends" every weekend beginning January 6, 2006 turning a library of 55 years of rock history over to its listeners, DJs and special guests. Beginning Friday nights at 10 p.m. and concluding Monday mornings at 6 a.m., veteran NY radio talents Dan Neer and Harris Allan along with current 92.3 Free-FM DJ Julie Slater will unleash "Free Rock Weekends." Listeners and some of the biggest names in rock will be given the opportunity to create their own playlists choosing the music they want to hear on the station.
K-Rock2, the 24 hour/7 days a week online radio station, will continue playing the latest music from today's hottest rock and alternative artists. The station is accessible at www.krock2.com.
"Free-FM allows us to offer audiences a diverse lineup of programs each with their own perspective. By adding "Free Rock Weekends" we’re able to break the mold of how traditional talk formats are created," said CBS Radio President of Programming Rob Barnett.
The complete 92.3 Free-FM weekday talent line-up includes David Lee Roth, JV & Elvis, Penn Jillette, Leslie Gold and Booker.
