| One Million Fans Turn Out For Free Stones Show |

The Rolling Stones treated an estimated 1 million fans to a free show on Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach on Saturday night in what Reuters says was one of the biggest Rock concerts ever. Many of the onlookers crammed the mile-long stretch of beach and others watched from private boats in the bay and from hotel rooms along Atlantic Avenue, the main thoroughfare along the beach. With Rio's reputation as a violent city, police deployed more than 6,000 officers for the massive event. Officials had been worried about widespread theft and trouble with drug gangs that rule the shantytowns in Brazil, according to Reuters. A fire department official said about 250 people were treated for exhaustion, drunkenness and other problems during the Stones' two-hour show, but luckily that was the worst of it.
"Nothing serious happened, thanks to God. It was calm," police Col. Leonardo Tavares told Reuters.
The band's set reportedly spanned their entire career from "Jumping Jack Flash" and "Satisfaction" to tracks from A Bigger Bang. Fans came from as far away as Japan and Europe for the show, and some arrived at the beach at 9 a.m. Saturday morning to get as close to the stage as possible. Reuters notes that it was billed as the biggest Rock concert ever, but a reported 3.5 million people saw a free show by Rod Stewart on Copacabana Beach on New Year's Eve 1994.
