With Howard Stern's suspension well into its second month and the Spring book now underway, one Clear Channel Active Rock station is temporarily filling its morning hole by putting bands behind the microphone. WTFX/Louisville's Backstage Morning Show launched Monday with the guys from 3 Doors Down intro-ing the tunes and picking up the drivetime slack. Tuesday it was Louisville's own Tantric and Wednesday it's Seven Mary Three. After initially planning for just one week of guest DJs, OM Michael Lee now has most of April's schedule mapped out, and it includes some of Rock's biggest current artists.
Lee tells FMQB he sends "our morning show outline" and content suggestions to the bands and leaves the rest up to them. They cut a series of breaks and dash them off to Fox Creative Services Director Chris Allman, who packages them for broadcast.
"They can talk about anything they want," Lee says of his moonlighters. "Our listeners always want to hear what Rock stars have to say. Thanks to the record labels, we're able to keep the buzz going on the station in the market while Howard's under suspension."
