Green Day is putting the finishing touches on their trilogy of albums, titled !Uno!,!Dos! and !Tre!. The albums will be released on September 25, November 13 and January 15, 2013, respectively, and frontman Billie Joe Armstrong calls the trilogy "a crazy idea that happens to be working really well." Rather than going back to their Punk Rock roots or constructing another Rock Opera type of album, Green Day decided this time to experiment with some new sounds.
"We're changing the guitar sound. We're not going with the big Marshall-amp thing," Armstrong told Rolling Stone in a new interview. "We wanted something punchier, more power pop – somewhere between AC/DC and the early Beatles... The last two records were studio albums. This one – we started rehearsing every day, constructing these songs together. It felt like we were all in a room jamming – everyone in the mix, throwing out ideas. If you listen to it, it feels grand. But it also feels like a garage band."
One song on Uno!, called "Kill the DJ," even finds Green Day experimenting with dance sounds. "[Bassist] Mike [Dirnt] asked me to write a song with a four-on-the-floor rhythm. I'd never done it before," Armstrong explained. "It's kind of like [The Clash album] Sandinista!,Ian Dury's 'Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll' and the Tom Tom Club song, 'Genius of Love.' We were trying to figure out how to make dance music without turning into a dance band."
Green Day already has released a brief trailer for Uno!, and the band also has been announced as a headliner for New Orleans' annual Voodoo Music Experience, taking place from October 26-28. Check out the album trailer below:
