Beyonce, Jay-Z & Kanye West Top BET Awards
July 2, 2012

The Throne: Jay-Z and Kanye West

At Sunday night's BET Awards, Beyoncé, Chris Brown, Jay-Z and Kanye West stole the spotlight as they were all multiple award winners. Beyoncé was named Video Director of the Year (along with Alan Ferguson) as well as Best Female R&B Artist, and she thanked the R&B genre along with her female singing influences. "I fell in love with music by listening to R&B. It's the core of who I am," Beyoncé said in her acceptance speech, giving thanks to Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige and "Whitney Houston, my angel."

When B lost Video of the Year to Jay-Z and Kanye West for "Otis," she playfully hit her husband and laughed. Jay and Kanye also earned the trophy for Best Group for their collaborative work as The Throne. Chris Brown was also a double winner, picking up his second consecutive win for Best Male R&B artist, and the "Fandemonium" award for a third time. Other music awards were handed out to Nicki Minaj for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, Drake for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist, and Big Sean for Best New Artist.

In addition to the awards, the big focus of the night was the emotional tribute to Whitney Houston. Mariah Carey opened the tribute by recalling the last time she saw Houston, and how the two laughed and gossiped together. "I miss my friend. I miss hearing her voice and laughter, but we'll always have the music," Carey said. "We'll always have that voice we fell in love with, she inspired us all, we'll always have my friend Whitney Houston." R&B singer Monica then sang "I Love The Lord," a gospel song once performed by Houston, and Brandy did a medley of two Houston hits, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" and "I'm Your Baby Tonight."

Houston's brother Gary sang "Where You Are," and her mother Cissy provided the emotional highlight of the ceremony when she gave a heartfelt rendition of "Bridge Over Troubled Water," leaving many audience members in tears and garnering a standing ovation. Chaka Khan rounded out the tribute with the late singer's classic hit, "I'm Every Woman."
