Quick Hits: Ben Gibbard, Bob Dylan, Lady Gaga, Robert Plant, Two Door Cinema Club, Blaqk Audio, Coachella, Deep Purple
July 17, 2012

Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard will release his first solo album this fall. Former Lives is due out on Barsuk Records on October 16. Speaking to Stereogum about the record, Gibbard said it is "something of a mixed bag. The songs themselves are not all of a particular mode — they’re not all about one subject — and they’re not from one definitive era of my life." Gibbard will head out on a solo tour later this year.

Bob Dylan will offer his 35th studio album, Tempest, on September 11 via Columbia Records. The 10-track album was produced by Dylan under the pseudonym Jack Frost. The legendary singer/songwriter is currently on tour in Europe, and he will make his way to North America in August for a tour wrapping on September 9 in Hershey, PA.

Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga shared the print ad for her new fragrance, Fame, via Twitter on Monday. The black-and-white photo features a fully nude Mother Monster wearing a black mask, with tiny men climbing up her body and strategically covering certain body parts. It was shot by famed fashion photographer Steven Klein. "I won't lie I'm a bit nervous. its been a while since i've shared some work with you," Gaga tweeted. "But i'm so proud of Steven+I, we really did not sleep!" Fame is due out in September.

In an interview with Britain's The Independent, Robert Plant confirmed reports that he married singer-songwriter and Band of Joy backing vocalist Patty Griffin in Texas. Plant tells the publication, "I eloped and ran off to Texas. So now I spend half my time there and half here (in the UK)." Griffin has been in the Band of Joy since 2010.

Scottish indie-rockers Two Door Cinema Club will release their second record, Beacon, on September 4 and bassist Kevin Baird says the new album was inspired by the California lifestyle. Speaking to Rolling Stone, Baird says the band had enough of the moody weather in Scotland, and when they got to Los Angeles to record, "we totally swallowed up this lifestyle there. We'd put our short shorts on and go for a run along the beach in Venice before we'd head up to the studio. On the weekends, we'd go shoot guns or something. We went out to bars and had our car parked valet, which we've never done before. We just loved it – going to Trader Joe's –  we felt so healthy. At the end we were like, 'We wish we could stay here and just keep doing this.'" Two Door Cinema Club will head out on a North American tour starting September 28 in New York City, with dates announced up to October 28 in Santa Ana, CA.

AFI side project Blaqk Audio will release their second album, Bright Black Heaven, on September 11. The electronic duo of AFI members Davey Havok and Jade Puget will release the new record on their own Big Death imprint, distributed by Superball Music.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Goldenvoice, the promotions company behind the Coachella festival, will announce that they will be expanding the Coachella brand to include a cruise. While detals are scant right now, it is expected that the ship will sail out of Florida perhaps as early as December. The company has already set aside two weekends for Coachella next year, on April 12-14 and April 19-21.

Deep Purple keyboardist and co-founder Jon Lord died in a London hospital on Monday at the age of 71. A message on his official website reads: "It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Jon Lord, who suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism today, Monday 16 July at the London Clinic, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Jon was surrounded by his loving family." Lord co-wrote many of Deep Purple's legendary songs, such as "Smoke On The Water," and he went on to play with many other bands and musicians during his career, including Whitesnake and Paice.
