Billy Corgan Now Cubs Correspondent for WXRT/Chicago
May 21, 2004

He may be known as a rocker with his bands The Smashing Pumpkins and Zwan, but Billy Corgan can now add sportscaster to his resume. Corgan turned up Friday morning (5/21) on Triple A WXRT/Chicago's morning show - hosted by Lin Brehmer - as Cubs correspondent. This was the first installment of The Wrigleyville Report, a new morning show feature scheduled for Mondays and Fridays at 8:05 a.m through October 4, the end of the regular season. 'XRT VP of Programming Norm Winer hopes to extend the deal through the playoffs, but says that depends on the Cubs' fortunes.

"We've always been identified with the Cubs," says Winer, noting Brehmer's passion for team.  "Listeners have told us they believe Lin lives and dies with the Cubs, so we decided to grab on to it." Brehmer has become known for infamous song parodies about the Cubs. During last year's playoff run, 'XRT did remotes from Wrigley Field before and after games. That's when Winer approached Chicago native Corgan - a major Cubs fan in his own right who traveled to all the playoff games at his own expense - to do reports. "This year, we felt we wanted to take advantage of [Chicago's] interest in the Cubs, so Billy and I started talking."

Winer, who calls Corgan "very knowledgeable," say the Rock star will provide analysis and commentary on the team's  previous week performance and preview the upcoming week's game series. "It's not a monologue - it's live and he'll be talking to Lin Brehmer and they get along great!  We thought it was very 'XRT-like to have Billy on to talk about the Cubs from his perspective. He's arguably the hippest Cubs fan in the world. Other than Lin."
