Justin Bieber was the big winner at Sunday night's 40th annual American Music Awards, walking away as Artist of the Year and Favorite Male Artist - Pop/Rock. Bieber also won for Favorite Album - Pop/Rock with Believe. Bieber brought his mother onstage with him when he accepted Artist of the Year, the final award of the night.

Nicki Minaj was the only other multiple winner of the night, named Favorite Artist - Rap/Hip-Hop, while Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded was named Favorite Album - Rap/Hip-Hop.

Other notable winners included Carly Rae Jepsen as New Artist of the Year, Katy Perry as Favorite Female Artist - Pop/Rock, Maroon 5 as Favorite Band, Duo or Group - Pop/Rock and Linkin Park for Favorite Artist - Alternative Rock. Adele was named Favorite Artist - Adult Contemporary. Usher won for Favorite Male Artist - Soul/R&B, with Beyonce winning for Female Artist. The Favorite Album - Soul/R&B was Rihanna's Talk That Talk. The new Favorite Artist - EDM award went to David Guetta. Also Taylor Swift was named Favorite Country Female Artist for the fifth year in a row, giving her 11 AMAs in total.

Notable performances throughout the award show came from Usher, who did a three-song medley, and Kelly Clarkson, who also sang a medley of her hits. No Doubt performed their latest single, "Looking Hot," while Swift sang "I Knew You Were Trouble" from her new album Red. Ke$ha performed her new single, "Die Young," as well. Christina Aguilera sang a medley of songs off her brand-new release Lotus, while P!nk unveiled a ballet-inspired performance of "Try." The entire evening wrapped up with PSY and his smash hit "Gangam Style," with MC Hammer making a surprise appearance dancing onstage with the K-Pop star, as the song segued into Hammer's '90s tune "Too Legit To Quit."

The AMAs also honored the late Whitney Houston and the award show's founder, Dick Clark. Clark was memorialized with a video montage of his career over a performance from Stevie Wonder.
