Quick Hits: Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, David Bowie, How To Destroy Angels, The Oscars
February 21, 2013

Justin Timberlake will be taking over NBC late night TV next month, when he hosts and performs on Saturday Night Live, then spends a week on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Timberlake has hosted and cameoed on SNL numerous times over the years and will serve as host and musical guest on March 9. JT officially joins the SNL "five timers" club with this turn hosting. He will then spend the following week (March 11-15) as a featured guest of Fallon, performing and chatting every night.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga had surgery on Wednesday to fix the labral tear in her right hip, and she praised her loyal fans for helping her cope with the fear she felt about the surgery. On her Little Monsters website, Gaga wrote that her fans "gave me a lot of strength." She added, "Everything happened so fast, but when it came time to face it I reflected on the many stories and experiences you've shared with me about your lives. Meeting you backstage, reading your letters, watching you communicate with fans from around the globe to form a community that supports one another -- You have completely blown my mind... sometimes you are so brave that it terrifies me. I wonder how it's even possible. So I thought to myself, 'I'm alive, I'm living my dream, and this is just a bump in the road.' I'm grateful because this is temporary, and for some it is not. You have changed my life. I love you and am proud to be a part of your lives. If you can do it, I can do it too, and if we stick together we can get through anything."

In a new interview with Ryan Seacrest, Mariah Carey says she wants to release her next album "ASAP," adding that she's "really working hard" while also appearing as an American Idol judge. Carey just released a new single, "Almost Home," from the upcoming film Oz: The Great And Powerful.

David Bowie guitarist Gerry Leonard says the odds are "50-50" on whether Bowie will do a tour to promote his new album, The Next Day, which drops on March 12. "A couple of times, when we played back one of the more kick-ass tunes from the new record, he'd be like, 'This would be great live!' Of course, everyone was like, 'What? Did he just say that?' But other times he'd just roll his eyes if someone brought up playing live," Leonard told Rolling Stone. "If he gets the bug in him to do it, it'll happen. His voice is sounding great and he's looking great, too. He could totally do it. You never know with David, though. I feel he might want to make another record before he plays shows. He's being really prolific right now

Trent Reznor's How to Destroy Angels have mapped out a string of tour dates for April, in addition to their already-confirmed appearance at both weekends of the Coachella festival. The band also has scheduled dates in cities such as Las Vegas, Denver, Chicago, Toronto and Boston, with the final date being on April 29 in New York. Reznor also hinted on Twitter that more band activity may be coming when he wrote: "Big news coming next week (for real this time)."

More musical performers have been added to this Sunday's Academy Awards broadcast. Jennifer Hudson will join fellow past Oscar winners Russell Crowe and Catherine Zeta-Jones in a tribute to movie musicals, while Oscar host Seth McFarlane will duet with actress/singer Kristin Chenoweth to close out the show. Adele, Norah Jones, Barbara Streisand and Shirley Bassey have all been announced as performers as well.
