Metallica has announced the return of its eclectic Orion Music + More festival, but rather than Atlantic City, the band's 2nd annual event will be held in Detroit this year. Headliners will include Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rise Against, Deftones and Bassnectar, as well as acts such as Gogol Bordello, Foals, Tomahawk, The Joy Formidable, Death Grips and local Detroit bands. Orion Music + More will be held at Detroit's Belle Isle on June 8 and 9.
"Last year's Orion Music + More festival was hands down the highlight of the Metallica calendar. A great time was had by all, especially the band members," said drummer Lars Ulrich. "The fact that it also resonated with enough of our fans and friends that it warrants another go-around in '13 is beyond exciting. I can think of no better place than the Motor City, with its rich and diverse history of music, for the second ride on our Orion festival train."
Metallica's "Met Club" fan club ticket presale starts February 26 at 10 a.m. and runs through February 28 at 10 p.m. Tickets will go onsale to the public on March 1 at 10 a.m. More announcements about additional bands and other attractions will be coming soon.
Metallica is gearing up for plenty of other activity as well. As previously reported, the band is teaming up with the San Francisco Giants for the first ever "Metallica Night" at AT&T Park on Friday, May 3. When the Giants take on the Los Angeles Dodgers, the band will kick off the game with the National Anthem and first pitch. The group's 3D movie, Metallica Through The Never, is coming to theaters on August 9, and they have been writing material for a new album as well.
