Billie Joe Armstrong Talks Rehab Stint
February 27, 2013

Green Day
Billie Joe Armstrong has opened up about his stint in rehab last year that forced Green Day to postpone an arena tour in support of their trio of albums, ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tré!. Armstrong told Rolling Stone that he was dealing with years of alcohol and prescription drug abuse, and he said: "I couldn't predict where I was going to end up at the end of the night. I'd wake up in a strange house on a couch. I wouldn't remember how. It was a complete blackout."

His low point came with his onstage meltdown at the iHeartRadio festival in Las Vegas last September, where the frontman smashed his guitar onstage and shouted, "I'm not f***ing Justin Bieber, you motherf***ers."

"I remember tiny things," Armstrong told the magazine of the Vegas incident. "The next morning, I woke up. I asked [my wife] Adrienne, 'How bad was it?' She said, 'It's bad.' I called my manager. He said, 'You're getting on a plane, going back to Oakland and going into rehab immediately.'"

Meanwhile, Green Day's rescheduled arena tour will kick off on March 28 in Rosemont, IL, and run until April 18 in Los Angeles. The band is also warming up with some intimate club shows on March 10 in Pomona, CA, March 11 in Tempe, AZ and March 13 in El Paso, TX. Green Day also confirmed that they'll appear at next month's SXSW festival in Austin, TX, where they'll screen their ¡Cuatro! documentary and premiere a new doc, Broadway Idiot. They've also booked a performance in Austin on March 15 at the Moody Theater.
