Linkin Park Finds Their Inner "Carnivore"

In a new video interview with Rolling Stone, Linkin Park rapper and multi-instrumentalist Mike Shinoda explains how he drew songwriting inspiration from an article about Japanese culture when he was working on the group's upcoming album, The Hunting Party, which is due on June 17. It is said to be the band's heaviest album to date.

"[The article] was talking about how people [in Japan] were concerned that the new generation of kids were becoming 'herbivores' – they were passive and they weren't going out and getting a job or getting a girlfriend. They were sitting and playing video games and waiting for stuff to come to them," he says. "They were worried what was going to happen to their culture if there weren't any more 'carnivores.' I thought, 'What's going on in Rock music is really the same thing.' I connected with that on a deep emotional level because I was looking for something that was visceral and aggressive, and I wanted to hear this certain kind of music, and I couldn't find it."

That idea of being aggressive also informed the name of the group's upcoming Carnivores tour, as well as the title of The Hunting Party. Vocalist Chester Bennington added that he was on board with writing some heavier music, especially since it provides more energetic moments for the band's live show.

"One of things we always try to incorporate into our set is songs with energy - songs with some balls. We can write a thousand 'Iridescents' and, as great as they are, it's going to be boring," he said. "With this album it was more like the opposite. We needed to maybe consider toning a song or two down a bit, because it's f**king crazy the whole time. That's going to be fun because there will be no shortage of energy to draw from."

Linkin Park produced the album themselves, save for the track "Wastelands of Today," produced by Rob Cavallo. Meanwhile, the aforementioned Carnivores tour will kick off on August 8 in West Palm Beach, FL and will hit 25 cities before wrapping on September 19 in Concord, CA. LP is co-headlining with Thirty Seconds To Mars, and AFI will be the supporting act.
