Quick Hits: BET Awards, Austin Mahone, Rise Against, Gwar, Soundgarden
June 4, 2014

Lil Wayne, Pharrell Williams, Drake, Usher, Trey Songz, Lionel Richie and Jennifer Hudson have all been tapped to perform at this year's BET Awards. Drake, Beyoncé and Jay Z lead the 2014 nominations with five nods each. Comedian/actor Chris Rock will host the BET Awards, which take place in Los Angeles on June 29 at 8 p.m. EST.

Austin Mahone will sing the U.S. national anthem at Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat on Thursday night. The performance will be televised live on ABC. Mahone, a San Antonio native and huge Spurs fan, will then return to his hometown on July 25 to kick off his North American headlining tour.

In a teaser video posted on their website, Rise Against announced a July 15 release date for their seventh studio album, The Black Market, on Interscope Records. The first single, "I Don't Want To Be Here Anymore," will be available for download and streaming as of Tuesday, June 10. Fans can watch the band's announcement and hear a snippet of the single at

Medical examiners have determined that Gwar frontman Dave Brockie died of an accidental heroin overdose. Brockie was found unresponsive by his roommate in his Richmond, VA home on March 23. Police investigators had found evidence of heroin use, but the cause of death wasn't finalized until toxicology tests were completed, according to Richmond's WTVR News.

Promoting the 20th anniversary deluxe reissue of Superunknown, Soundgarden rocked The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night and played two songs from that album: "Spoonman" and "My Wave." The band had already been in New York City for their performance at Webster Hall on Monday night, where they played Superunknown in its entirety for only the second time ever. Singer Chris Cornell also visited the hardDrive studios to chat about the anniversary of Superunknown, and a portion of that interview can be seen below:
