| After Two Years At XM, Opie & Anthony Get The Virus |
 |
October 4, 2006
Wednesday (10/4) marks the two-year anniversary of Opie & Anthony's time at XM Satellite Radio, and the duo celebrated by looking back on their XM tenure. They also made a special announcement today which finds O&A finally getting their wish as the "High Voltage" channel name will be changed to "Virus" later this month. It was two years ago that O&A forged new ground as the first major radio personalities to ink a deal and take their program to a satellite radio company. After announcing their XM agreement in August 2004, it wasn't until October 4 that Opie & Anthony debuted a live, weekday program that was carried exclusively on a then-new premium XM channel (Channel 202) for an additional monthly fee of $1.99. At the time, the premium fee was instituted to make it harder for the FCC to come knocking on XM's door about content, but it was knocked off in April 2005 as O&A became a part of the basic XM subscription. Currently under contract with XM until 2010, Opie & Anthony are also now simulcast on 24 terrestrial radio stations from 6am-9am by CBS Radio and Citadel Broadcasting. There is pressure mounting for the terrestrial radio simulcast to expand to 10am in order to better suit Arbitron's ratings system, which measures morning drive from 6am-10am. By expanding their program on terrestrial radio it would allow stations to feel the full effect of O&A in the ratings rather than having three-quarters of O&A and 1 hour of a low-rated midday program, such as in New York City where the JV & Elvis program loses over half of the O&A audience on CBS radio's WFNY, according to the latest Arbitrend.
