Godsmack Turns 10, Celebrates With Box Set
May 31, 2007

Godsmack

Godsmack has been rocking for a decade, and the band is planning the release of a box set to commemorate this milestone. The set will include all four of the band's studio albums, each of which may include expanded live material. In addition, the collection will feature their acoustic EP, The Other Side, as well as a DVD that chronicles the process of making each album. Drummer Shannon Larkin also hopes that a version of his nightly solo will make its way into the set.

“We’re just gonna try to make it really special,” Larkin told Billboard.com. “Basically, Universal, who we’ve been with since day one, said to us, ‘You tell us what you need and we’ll write the check. We want this to be special, too.’ We wanted to make it a road case, but as we were doing some research we saw that Metallica made one of their box sets look like a road case, so that’s out. If anyone has any suggestions, we’re open.”

While the band is working on this anniversary collection, Larkin, guitarist Tony Rombola and bassist Robbie Merrill are also getting ready to launch their side project with former Ugly Kid Joe singer Whitfield Crane. The album, which has been dubbed Another Animal, will feature excess material originally intended for Godsmack’s latest record, IV.

“Basically we caught fire and wrote almost 40 songs, about four or five of which got picked for the album. So we were left with over 30 songs that we really, really love and still wanted to get out there, so we ended up starting another band,” Larkin explained.

The new band should not encroach upon Godsmack in any way. “It's simply a side project that has nothing to do with [Godsmack frontman] Sully [Erna]. There’s no weirdness, no drama, no imminent break-up. We’d be foolish to end something that has such a nice history," said Larkin. "Hopefully [Another Animal] is something the Smack fans will like, too.”
