Quick Hits: Slipknot/Disturbed, Kanye West, Papa Roach, Usher, Daughtry, Avril Lavigne
January 11, 2008

Slipknot

With the buzz on Stone Sour finally dying down, Slipknot is ready to regroup and work on a new album. In fact, the nine-man band already has a summer tour planned. Billboard.com reports that Slipknot and Disturbed will hit the road this summer on the first ever Rockstar Mayhem tour, sponsored by Rockstar Energy drink. It will run in July and August, with additional artists to be announced. A new Slipknot CD is expected in August, and Disturbed's new album, Indestructible, is due in May.

Results from an autopsy done on Donda West, mother of Kanye, show that a heart attack played a role in her sudden death on November 10. The Los Angeles County Coroner concluded that "coronary artery disease and multiple post-operative factors due to or as a consequence of liposuction and mammoplasty" led to her death, according to MTV News. "In summary, it is my opinion Ms. West died from some pre-existing coronary artery disease and multiple post-operative factors following surgery," wrote Deputy Medical Examiner Louis A. Peña. However, "based on the history and available information, as currently known, the manner of death could not be determined." The coroner's office had been investigating possible complications from cosmetic surgery that was performed on West on November 9.

Papa Roach has chosen Tenth Street Entertainment – home to Mötley Crüe, SIXX: A.M., Buckcherry, Drowning Pool and more – as their new management. "After meeting with several managers, we concluded that Tenth Street’s history of success in the rock genre, along with their vast internal resources, will best position us to succeed as the industry continues to evolve," said Papa Roach front man Jacoby Shaddix. Tenth Street CEO Allen Kovac added, "There aren’t many bands in this current decade who will be making their 5th album and can play a full set of hits behind an established touring base. We feel fortunate to be working with them on what we believe will be the record that makes a quantum leap in their career." The band is currently in the studio writing for their next CD and will shortly begin recording.

It has been almost four years since Usher released his mega-hit album Confessions, and potential release dates for the next effort keep coming and going. However, the word is that a new CD should be out this year. "He has been taking a pretty long time to put it out, but I think he's ready now," producer Jermaine Dupri told Billboard.com. "The last couple times I've been around [him], you could tell he's got the bug to hurry up and put this record out. He wants to get back out here and give the people that. He's got that itch." Dupri produced a new Usher track called "The Realest" and T-Pain produced "All the Time," while Ludacris guests on "Dat Girl Right There."

Chris Daughtry and his band already have 17 songs in the can for their sophomore album, which they hope to finish writing in the spring. "Chris just sits at the back of the bus and will come out with something and say, ‘I just wrote this thing,’ and it’s amazing,” guitarist Josh Steeley told Gibson.com. "The new stuff isn’t too far from the album that’s out now, but it’s more complex." Daughtry added that most of his bandmates do their songwriting separately and fit the pieces together later. "Some songs are coming out a little heavier than the last record, and some songs are just way more beautiful," Daughtry said.

Avril Lavigne has reached a settlement over the alleged copyright infringement of her hit song, "Girlfriend." Seventies songwriting team Rubinoos claimed that the song was vastly similar to "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend," which they wrote in 1979, but Avril said she had never heard the song. A lawyer for Rubinoos told the Canadian Press that a confidential settlement had been reached in the case.
