After Sony BMG revealed last week it is mulling launching its own digital music service that would give users unlimited access to its catalog for a monthly fee, Warner Music Group (WMG) says it has a similar idea. The company confirmed that it envisions a $5-a-month subscription service that would enable users to download, copy and share music without restrictions. The subscription cost would be charged on people's monthly Internet bill, and revenue would be divided among the labels, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Warner's interest in the service was first reported by Portfolio.com. Two other label executives said their companies were contemplating a similar move.
"All the labels agree to the idea of subscription, and we're all talking about the structure of how much music over how much time," one music executive said, according to the Times. "It's not meant to be a panacea but to help support this area of retail."
