Variety reports that Paramount Pictures and MTV Films are teaming up to tell the story of the rise, fall and rise again of Napster, the innovative file-sharing program that has gone legit. The project was originally conceived as a made-for-TV movie in 2002, but last year was upped to a big screen release. The film will tell the tale of Napster founder Shawn Fanning, who created the file-sharing system in 1999 in his college bedroom. Fanning currently heads up Snocap, a system designed to legitimize peer-to-peer file swapping.
Surprisingly, the film is being written by actor Alex Winter, best known for his portrayal of Bill S. Preston, Esq. in the Bill & Ted movies. No word on whether Wyld Stallyns will be contributing to the soundtrack.
