Over the past week, it has been revealed that Beck will release his next studio record in the very near future. Now the prolific singer/songwriter has spoken to Rolling Stone about the album, which was co-produced by Danger Mouse of Gnarls Barkley.Beck said the album, which is tentatively titled Modern Guilt, "was the most intensive work I’ve ever done on anything. It was like trying to fit two years of songwriting into two and a half months. I know I did at least 10 weeks with no days off, until four or five in the morning every night." As for working with Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton), "it felt like we could have been making our fourth record together. It did help that we share a lot of musical references. We spent the first week just talking about different records. His knowledge is pretty deep, especially with some of the obscure late-Sixties, early-Seventies rock."
Rolling Stone reports the new material "is full of off-kilter rhythms and left-field breakdowns, with an overall 1960s British vibe." Some of the new tunes include "Modern Guilt," "Beggars Shoes," "Chem Trails" and "Wails," which features backing vocals from Cat Power.
"I can’t tell you how many times I wrote and recorded a complete song," Beck said, "and then just took everything away but the drumbeat and wrote a whole new song." Most of the new songs feature just Beck on most instruments, with Danger Mouse adding keyboards. The album is reportedly just 10 songs long, clocking in around a half hour. However, Beck says, "I was hoping all the songs would be two minutes long, but then I got rid of all the short songs."
While the new album does not have an official release date yet, it is expected to appear sometime soon, and no later than the summertime. Some reports have suggested Beck could spring the album on fans, a la The Raconteurs' Consolers Of The Lonely. The record also fulfills his contract with Interscope. "I’ve had this deal since my early 20s," he told Rolling Stone. "I don’t have any plans at the moment. It’s anybody’s guess where things are going week to week with the music business."
