KKXX Morning Show Fired Over "Head" Joke
March 15, 2005

The morning duo of Rocky Nash and Scott "Snatch The Sidekick" Welter were fired from American General Media-owned KKXX/Bakersfield recently over a bit regarding the departure of KoRn guitarist Brian "Head" Welch.

On Wednesday, March 2, the duo discussed a catch phrase -- "KoRn Gave Head To God" -- that began appearing online about the guitarist. Welch has said he left the band because of his newfound religious beliefs, so the catch phrase was beginning to circulate, making fun of him. Not only was the phrase "KoRn Gave Head To God" being discussed on message boards, it was even printed on t-shirts that were being sold online. Nash and Welter began talking about the phrase on the air, which is what led to their termination two days later.

"We never intended to offend anyone," Welter told the Bakersfield Californian. "We pride ourselves on being a family show. Kids and their parents sometimes listen to us before school."

The morning team said they were not endorsing or encouraging the phrase. They contend that they were even criticizing the Web sites for printing it. But it still resulted in complaint calls from some listeners.

"This was about these Internet headlines and people not proofreading what they write," Nash told the newspaper. "It wasn't about pushing the envelope... We were stunned that [the station] went from zero to fired, there was no middle ground. We have never even had a reprimand for show content."

On their last show, Welter and Nash apologized to any listeners who may have been offended. They said they received many calls from people who were supportive.

GM Roger Fessler commented to the Bakersfield Californian, "We wish nothing but the best for our two former employees."
