Earlier this week, AOL Radio launched its new upgrade, featuring content and streaming stations from CBS Radio, via the companys' recent partnership. Now the new AOL-CBS tag team is joining forces with Apple and the popular iPhone. AOL Radio for the iPhone will give users immediate, free access to over 200 stations, including CBS Radio stations around the country. WFAN/New York, 1010 WINS/New York, KROQ/Los Angeles and WXRT/Chicago are among the many CBS stations available now via AOL Radio.
The new application for the iPhone has won AOL an Apple Design Award as part of Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco as "Best Entertainment Application." "We’re thrilled to be recognized by Apple for the work that has gone into AOL Radio for the iPhone," said AOL EVP Kevin Conroy. "The API's available in the iPhone SDK provided us with all the tools necessary to quickly create a terrific version of AOL Radio for the iPhone OS and we're looking forward to adding streaming radio to the many great experiences available to iPhone users."
Apple unveiled the next generation of iPhones earlier this week as well.
In other radio/phone news, a new study commissioned by the NAB found that FM radio reciever technology in cell phones could expand the reach of radio to 257 million Americans. "Radio is a service that already reaches 235 million American listeners every week," said NAB President/CEO David Rehr. "With 257 million cell phones currently in service, we're confident that implementation of a new FM-radio feature would result in rapid penetration, benefiting not only the radio business and American consumers, but the cell phone, electronics manufacturing, and music industries as well." The full study, entitled "Study of the Potential for FM Radio to be a Universal Feature on Cellular Handsets," can be read here in PDF format.
