In this week's issue of FMQB (4/1), Saga Communications' Chairman/President/CEO Ed Christian addresses what he believes is the unfair rap terrestrial radio is taking in the press these days because of increased competition from satellite and Internet radio and MP3 players, plus he challenges program and promotion directors to "color outside the lines."Excerpts from FMQB - 04/01/05 Issue:
Where terrestrial radio's bad press is coming from: "Let’s start first off with where this information overload on the death of radio is coming from. The figure I’ve heard is anywhere between 12 and 19 public relations firms are employed by XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio versus the number of public relations firms that are important in the radio industry, which is zero. Now if you’re sitting in the board room of XM and Sirius with your various PR firms and you decide that you’ve got a game plan that has to grow your company at the expense of somebody else, the best thing to do is try to paint the competition as old technology, outdated, out of touch, obsolete, bad audio, over-commercialized, and over-programmed, and this is what’s happened."
Howard Stern leaving terrestrial radio for satellite radio: "Let me put it very simply, and that is if you really get down to it, Howard Stern is in his 50s, and if Howard Stern cut his hair and got rid of the purple glasses, it would be like your dad asking you to go to the topless bar and have a couple of lap dances. So what happens here is that this is really Howard’s last bite at the apple, because his act, as defined by the government and popular taste now, doesn’t play."
What Ed would say to new FCC Commissioner Kevin Martin regarding indecency: "The first thing I’d say is, `Okay, it’s your job to say we can’t be obscene or indecent. Tell me what that is.'”
