For months, rumors have persisted that a 20th anniversary sequel to Live Aid was in the works. Recently, Bono has strongly hinted at U2 concerts that fans should be thinking about Live Aid as the Fourth Of July weekend gets closer. Now, Live Aid founders Bob Geldof and Midge Ure have told reporters that they are planning a major concert event, but refuse to call it "Live Aid 2." At the U.K.'s Ivor Novello awards, the two confirmed there would be a concert tied into the G8 summit this July.According to the BBC, Geldof told reporters, "What started 20 years ago is coming to a political point in a few weeks. There's more than a chance that the boys and girls with guitars will finally get to turn the world on its axis. What we do in the next five weeks is seriously, properly, historically, politically important." Added Ure, "It's big, and it's as petrifying as the build-up to Live Aid, if not more so."
Sting presented the duo with an award, saying he would be taking part in the concert event. "Bob called me up and said I was doing it," he said. "He doesn't ask you, he tells you."
Many major artists are expected to be taking part in the concert, including Paul McCartney, U2, Coldplay, Oasis and Madonna. The latest rumor suggests that The Spice Girls could reunite for the occasion. A spokesperson for the Live Aid organization told Reuters, "We are in discussions with the Spice Girls to perform at Live Aid II if it happens." Additionally, a spokesperson for Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham declined to comment to Reuters, but did say that all five former members of the Pop group had been in contact with their former manager, Simon Fuller, who went on to create American Idol.
