Speaking at a panel during this week's NAB Radio Show, multiple radio CEOs ripped the FCC for approving the merger of Sirius and XM. Clear Channel CEO Mark Mays said, "I don’t know how they allowed XM and Sirius to merge into a monopoly. They clearly didn’t have the backbone right now to do the right thing," Mays added that "the right thing" would have been to mandate inclusion of HD Radio in all receivers.
CBS Radio CEO Dan Mason added that "Unless we’re in the box at the factory level, AM could become extinct," according to reports.
As for other issues facing radio, Cherry Creek Radio CEO Joe Schwartz said, "I don’t think we can make enough in digital [initiatives and online ad sales] to make up what we’re losing in radio." He added that his small market salespeople already have their hands full selling time on radio without also having to sell online ads. On the other hand, Mays and Mason said that digital sales are a major opportunity and growth area in large markets.
