Quick Hits: 311, Velvet Revolver, Goo Goo Dolls, Radiohead, Chevelle, The Flaming Lips

311

311 have mapped out a summer tour in support of their next studio album, Don't Tread On Me. Though the album does not have a concrete release date, it is expected to land in stores in early August. MTV.com reports that Papa Roach and Unwritten Law will be joining the Omaha-based veterans for most of trek. 311 will play a pair of warm-up shows in Santa Cruz, CA on July 27 and 28 and join the line up for the San Diego Street Scene Festival on July 30. The tour officially kicks off in Tucson on August 2, with dates scheduled until September 8 in Corpus Christi, TX.

Despite cutting short their tour overseas, Velvet Revolver is not breaking up. The Rock supergroup cancelled dates in Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Finland, which led to a Finnish report that the band had split up. However, a band spokeswoman denied those reports, saying that Velvet Revolver was returning to the States to begin work on the follow-up to last year's Contraband. According to Pollstar, she also cited "family obligations" and "pre-production work" on the next record as other reasons for halting the tour. Regardless, Velvet Revolver will hit the stage on July 2 as part of the London Live 8 concert.

The Goo Goo Dolls will celebrate their 20th anniversary together by entering a Los Angeles studio to record their ninth album, along with producer Glen Ballard (Dave Matthews Band, No Doubt). Bassist Robbie Takac told Rolling Stone, "The decision we made after touring on our last record was to do something that would be a significant jump. Some of the optimism that was gone last time has come back, and, as we've started work on the songs, it feels like we're doing something new and different." Takac has also kept busy with his own label, Good Charamel, and planning his "Music Is Art" high school tour. He says, "Because there are holes in the streets and there are wars being fought, the first funding to go is for the arts programs. A lot of it is about a need for sponsorship, and involvement in the school districts... I think we have a cool thing going on now."

Radiohead continue to work on the follow up to 2003's Hail To The Thief. Singer/guitarist Thom Yorke cryptically told NME.com, "It’s going well. It’s a bit like [2000's] Kid A – we’re going through a period of change. But that’s good. We’ll get there.” The band expects to release the album sometime next year.

Chevelle will bring along Taproot and 30 Seconds To Mars on a summer tour that begins in Indianapolis on July 9. MTV.com reports the tour will take the three bands mostly through the eastern half of the country, before winding up in Columbia, MO on August 17. Taproot will release Blue Sky Research on August 16, the very same day that tourmates 30 Seconds To Mars will drop their second album, A Beautiful Lie.

The Flaming Lips lead a surprisingly hipster-centric soundtrack for the upcoming Vince Vaughn/Owen Wilson comedy The Wedding Crashers. The soundtrack will also include songs from Jimmy Eat WorldRilo Kiley, Death Cab For Cutie, Bloc Party, Spoon and others. The Lips' mastermind Wayne Coyne tells Rolling Stone that he expects his band's new album, At War With The Mystics, to finally come out at the beginning of 2006. "At some point, you need a deadline," says Coyne. "That's how the Hoover Dam got built!"
