Quick Hits: Ramones, Def Jam, Staind, Gorillaz, Fiona Apple, Bloodhound Gang
June 22, 2005

Ramones

Ramones fans take note: a massive box set is scheduled for release on August 16 from Rhino Records. The extensive compilation, titled Weird Tales Of The Ramones, will contain over 80 songs spread out over three discs. The set also includes an expanded DVD version of the video compilation Lifestyles Of The Ramones. The box set is topped off by a comic book tribute to the influential Punk band.

Def Jam, Inc., a new book that extensively tells the story of the rise of the famous Def Jam Records, will be published on August 2. Author Stacy Gueraseva included interviews with over 70 Def Jam artists and employees throughout the label's history, including founders Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin.

Staind will visit a number of Best Buy stores around the country in July and August, leading up to the release of their next album, Chapter V. The band will preview the new record and meet fans. Staind is currently on tour with 3 Doors Down, Breaking Benjamin and No Address. Chapter V arrives in stores on August 9.

Damon Albarn says his cartoon band Gorillaz will perform live later this year, with a multiple night stand in the works for the U.K. Albarn told XFM, "We’re gonna play in Manchester for six nights, I think, at the Opera House. And the reason for that is that we wanted to play somewhere where we could be central because of all the mad collection of musicians and to get them in one place at one time is really difficult. That’s how it’s ended up. And I think it’s in November.” Gorillaz did tour behind their first album, with the musicians hidden behind a curtain while animation was projected onto screens above the stage.

Though Fiona Apple's shelved third album Extraordinary Machine leaked onto the Internet earlier this year, it looks like she is abandoning the album and starting from scratch. MTV.com reports that Apple is in the studio again, working on new material with producer Brian Kehew (Moog Cookbook).

Pranksters and Pennsylvania natives the Bloodhound Gang are campaigning to have their new song, "Pennsylvania," become the official state song of the Commonwealth. The track, which will appear on their fourth full-length album Hefty Fine, is not exactly complementary towards their home state, but you can judge for yourself at PennsylvaniaStateSong.com. Frontman Jimmy Pop says, "The only thing better than this becoming the new state song of Pennsylvania would be not living there." The Gang will play the Rolling Rock Town Fair on August 6. Hefty Fine arrives in stores on September 13.
