Quick Hits: U2, Metallica, Velvet Revolver, Death Cab For Cutie, Prodigy
November 26, 2008

The Edge has confirmed that the working title for next year's U2 record is indeed No Line On The Horizon. He explained to Mojo magazine that, "It's an image, Bono tells me. It's like when you're moving forward, but you’re not exactly sure what you're heading towards – that moment where the sea and the sky blend into one. It's an image of infinity, I suppose – a kind of Zen image." The guitarist also said that none of the material that U2 worked on with Rick Rubin has made the cut for the album. "We actually laid all that stuff to one side. Really out of deference to Rick and that set of songs we just said, 'OK, that’s that,' and we drew a line. So none of the Rick material went into this project. Everything has been written subsequently." Instead, longtime collaborators Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois were behind the boards for the majority of the new material. "We just thought, 'This is clearly where we are at our most potent at this moment, working with Brian and Danny, so let's follow that idea down the road,'" The Edge said. The new U2 album could be out as soon as February.

Metallica

While a follow up to Death Magnetic is still a long ways away, Lars Ulrich spoke to Rolling Stone about what Metallica could hypothetically do now that they have fulfilled their contract with Warner Bros. "We have that element of complete freedom with the next record, so we can do whatever we want. We could do an Internet thing or even put it on [hockey player] Andy Greene’s record label," he said. The drummer added, "I wouldn’t hold my breath for another Metallica record. I’m still decompressing and coming down from the whole experience of the last one, but if we spit one out every four or five years that’s not so bad."

The members of Velvet Revolver have confirmed that the group has split from RCA Records after two albums. According to a statement from the band members, they asked to be released from their deal to give them "complete freedom to go through whatever process it would take to accomplish" finding a new singer to replace Scott Weiland.

Death Cab For Cutie, the Grammy Foundation and the Do Something organization have joined up to launch Key Change Grants. The program encourages young people to promote social change through their music. "We know firsthand about music's power to help transform important issues," says bassist Nick Harmer. "We wanted to be part of this unique partnership." In related news, Death Cab's debut album, Something About Airplanes, was reissued this week as a deluxe edition from Barsuk Records.

U.K electronic act The Prodigy will return with their fifth album, Invaders Must Die, on March 3. Dave Grohl appears on the album, playing drums on the track "Run With The Wolves." The Prodigy will give away the title track as a free download via their Web site, www.theprodigy.com, for one week starting today.
