After becoming one of the first stations to offer podcasts, non-commercial Triple A KEXP/Seattle -- a station partly funded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen -- is now also working on delivering its signal to mobile phones and other portable devices. Reports say that the station will begin broadcasting to cell phones and handheld organizers later this month. This is all part of an initiative to expand KEXP worldwide, beyond the reach of its 720-watt transmitter, an effort that started with Webcasting in 1999.
KEXP's podcasts were the first in the U.S. to offer full-length songs, after overcoming the obstacle of ownership rights. Many songs were not available due to copyright restrictions. The station got around that by approaching bands that own their music and independent record labels, resulting the first podcast on July 21 featuring regional acts.
"Everyone is sitting around waiting for the labels to sign off," KEXP morning host John Richards told Bloomberg News. "I said, 'Let's just get the rights.'"
KEXP reports that up to 60,000 listeners log on at least once a week, in addition to its 100,000 terrestrial listeners.
