Quick Hits: album sales, Mariah Carey, Coldplay / Killers, Paul McCartney, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Katy Perry, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Doves
January 28, 2009

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift remained atop the SoundScan sales chart this week, as nine of the top ten albums remained the same. Swift's hit record Fearless sold over 62,000 copies in her eighth week at #1. The only new entry in the top ten came from Mariah Carey, with her new Ballads compilation at #10. Indie rock faves Andrew Bird (#12), Animal Collective (#13) and Bon Iver (#16) all notched impressive debuts. The rest of the top ten was made up of Beyoncé, Nickelback, Kanye West, the Twilight soundtrack, Keyshia Cole, Britney Spears, Jamie Foxx and the Notorious soundtrack.

In other Mariah Carey news, songwriter/artist The Dream told KIIS/Los Angeles earlier this week that he is working on new material with the Pop superstar. The Dream co-wrote Carey's single "Touch My Body" from last year's E=MC^2. He said that while the record is still in the early stages, "it's like we're trying to make a greatest hits [album] without using the greatest hits," according to MTV News.

Coldplay and The Killers will team up for a co-headlining benefit gig in the U.K. next month. The concert will take place February 18, immediately after the BRIT Awards, at London's O2 Shepherds Bush Empire venue. Each band will play a 45-minute set, and all proceeds go to the War Child charity. A new War Child benefit album is also on the way February 16, which includes current artists covering legends, such as Beck taking on Bob Dylan, The Hold Steady covering Bruce Springsteen and many more.

Sir Paul McCartney will appear on The Colbert Report tonight on Comedy Central, chatting with Stephen Colbert about his new electronic project, The Fireman.

Lynyrd Skynyrd keyboardist Billy Powell has reportedly passed away at his home in Florida at the age of 56. Powell was one of the two surviving band members from the famous 1977 plane crash that took the lives of three members of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Billboard reports that Skynyrd is set to perform this Friday in Louisiana, but some shows will likely be cancelled. Legacy.com also is now featuring a Legacy Memorial Website for Powell, which can be found here.

Production team The Matrix had been set to release their own album, featuring up-and-coming singers, back in 2003. The self-titled record sat on the shelf for years, but since one of the vocalists on The Matrix was Katy Perry, renewed interest in the material has led to a digital release. Matrix member Lauren Christy told MTV News that once the group had the rights to the album again, they planned an iTunes release, but asked for Perry's blessing first. Christy said Perry told her, "I don't think right now is particularly the best time for me to have it released. But I would revisit the idea when the image and direction I want for my music has become more firmly established."

The Smashing Pumpkins have penned a song for a new Hyundai car ad which will debut during the Super Bowl pre-game show. The new Pumpkins track, titled "FOL," scores the new spot for the Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

Producer Nigel Godrich's From The Basement series will be released on DVD on March 3 from Eagle Rock Entertainment. The DVD includes two songs from Radiohead as well as a pair of solo performances from frontman Thom Yorke. Beck, The White Stripes, The Shins, Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey and Autolux are among the other artists whose From The Basement performances are included.

Brit band the Doves will release Kingdom Of Rust, their first new album in four years, on April 7 via Astralwerks. The new song "Jetstream" is currently available at doves.net as a free download.
