Springsteen Debuts New Lineup And New Tunes
March 24, 2009

Bruce Springsteen

On Monday night, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band took the stage at Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ for an intimate rehearsal show in preparation for the upcoming Working On A Dream tour. Over the course of two and a half hours, Springsteen led his group through greatest hits as well as band debuts of many songs from the new album in front of 3,000 fans he called "guinea pigs." "Don’t know if we’ve got a show yet, but we’re just going to run through a bunch of songs and see how we’re doing," The Boss told the crowd.

Springsteen scooped up a young girl from the audience to sing and dance with him during "Out In the Street," led the audience through a sing-along of "This Life," and did a cover of "Mustang Sally" with special guest John Eddie. Other tunes in the set list included “No Surrender,” “Mary’s Place,” “Candy’s Room,” "The Wrestler," "Thunder Road," "Born To Run" and "Because the Night," as well as about half of the new album.

Also notable was the addition of new faces, such as backup singers Curtis King and Cindy Mizelle from Springsteen’s most recent side project, the Seeger Sessions Band. Additionally, Max Weinberg’s 18-year-old son Jay sat in for "Good Eye" and six other tunes, practicing to take over for his dad this summer when his father returns to Conan O’Brien’s band on The Tonight Show.

"It’s unbelievable," the younger Weinberg told Rolling Stone after the show. "I’ve been on tour with them since I was nine, but I never thought I could be put into this family any deeper. It’s just a huge moment."

The Working On A Dream tour kicks off on April 1 in San Jose, CA.
