Quick Hits: Green Day, Metallica, U2, Incubus, Rancid, The Strokes, Nick Kids Choice Awards
March 30, 2009

Green Day’s American Idiot album will be adapted into a theatrical performance, to be presented by a 19-member company in California. The project was co-written by Tony-award winner Michael Mayer and Green Day frontman, Billie Joe Armstrong. "When I first heard American Idiot, I was struck by its innate theatricality," Mayer said in a statement. "Here was a new musical drama begging to be staged. Who would have thought that one of the most brutally honest, eloquent, passionate, funny and poetic theatrical responses to the post 9-11 world would be a Green Day record?" The production will feature songs from American Idiot as well as their upcoming album, 21st Century Breakdown. The show is expected to run from September 4 – October 11 at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre.

Metallica

Jason Newsted has confirmed that he will indeed perform with Metallica at their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on April 4, along with current bassist Robert Trujillo and another former bassist, Ron McGovney, who was in the band at its inception. Ray Burton, the father of the late Cliff Burton, also will be there. According to Newsted, drummer Lars Ulrich called and invited him to Cleveland for the induction. "I talked to Lars, and it’s all good," Newsted told Rolling Stone. "I was happy to hear from him. I hadn’t talked to him for a long time, so it was nice to hear his voice. It was basically as if no time had passed, as far as the conversation went. We picked up right where we left off. It was just absolutely positive. And Lars is ready to rock. He sounded like a kid again talking about the induction, and I felt pretty much like that, too. Getting fired up to rock after that many years… it’s pretty special." Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea will induct Metallica, and the ceremony will be broadcast live by Fuse TV.

After selling out shows in New York, Chicago and Boston over the weekend, U2 has added second shows in all three cities. The newly added dates in Chicago (9/13), Boston (9/21) and New York (9/25) were announced along with a second Toronto gig, which promptly sold out. Also, U2 has set the dates for the rest of this fall's North American leg of the 360 Tour. The massive trek will arrive in Washington, D.C. on September 29; Charlottesville, VA on October 1; Atlanta on October 6; Tampa on October 9; Los Angeles on October 25 and Vancouver on October 28.

Incubus has announced summer tour dates in support of their forthcoming greatest-hits record, Monuments And Melodies, due out June 16. A preview of the band’s new single, "Black Heart Inertia," is available via EnjoyIncubus.com and the song arrives at radio this Wednesday. The tour embarks July 9 in San Diego, CA and wraps up August 25 in Phoenix, AZ, with The Duke Spirit opening up.

Rancid

Rancid has announced details on the Punk band's long-awaited new record. Let The Dominos Fall, their first album in six years, will be out June 2. The first single, "Last One To Die," will debut online next Tuesday, April 7 via a widget available on Rancid's MySpace page. Rancid will be on tour this summer co-headlining with Rise Against.

The Strokes have announced they are back in the studio working on a fourth album after a nearly three-year hiatus. The follow-up to 2006’s First Impressions Of Earth is expected to drop before the close of 2009.

Before getting "slimed" at Nickelodeon’s Kids Choice Awards, the Jonas Brothers accepted the award for best music group. Miley Cyrus, Beyoncé and Jesse McCartney were also among the winners in musical categories at the show, which aired Saturday night. American Idol won for favorite reality show, and the cast of High School Musical 3 took home the award for favorite movie.
