 Depeche Mode
| A new Depeche Mode DVD, The Dark Progression, is due on June 16. The documentary film traces the development of Depeche Mode from the dawn of their career all the way through the departure of Alan Wilder in 1995 - a point in their career at which they had achieved enormous commercial success but were now facing huge personal challenges. The movie features interviews with all the band members, rare performances, and contributions from friends and colleagues such as Gary Numan, Thomas Dolby, OMD's Andy McCluskey, band biographer Jonathan Miller, Depeche producers Gareth Jones, Dave Bascombe, Phil Legg and Steve Lyon, and others. Depeche Mode's new album, Sounds Of The Universe, arrived in stores this week.
Tom Morello and Rapper Boots Riley will release the debut album of their band, Street Sweeper Social Club, on June 16. The 11-song set was produced by Morello and features Riley on vocals, Morello on guitar and bass, and Stanton Moore (Galactic) on drums. "It’s revolutionary party jams," says Morello of his new project. "It’s got huge steamroller riffs combined with depth, charge, funk, while Boots unloads clip after clip of incendiary rhymes rich with satire and venom." The group will be opening all dates on the Nine Inch Nails and Jane’s Addiction tour in May and June. Street Sweeper Social Club has three new songs - "Fight! Smash! Win!," "Clap For The Killers" and "The Oath" - streaming on their MySpace page now.
Heart Rockers Ann and Nancy Wilson, pop singer Jesse McCartney and British singer Natasha Bedingfield were honored at ASCAP's 26th annual pop awards in Hollywood on Wednesday. The Wilson sisters were given the Founders Award by long time friend and fan Jerry Cantrell. Wyclef Jean received the Creative Voice Award, while Song of the Year honors went to songwriters Jesse McCartney and Ryan Tedder for "Bleeding Love." Meanwhile, Norwegian songwriters/producers Mikkel Eriksen and Tor Hermansen - a.k.a. Stargate - earned ASCAP's Songwriter of the Year award. Stargate penned six of the most performed songs of the past year including Chris Brown's "With You," Ne-Yo's "Closer" and "Miss Independent," Rihanna's "Don't Stop The Music" and "Take a Bow," and Jordin Sparks' "Tattoo."
Manchester Orchestra has unveiled their new video for "Pride" via Spinner.com today. The band's current tour rolls into Baltimore and Philadelphia this weekend and it set to wrap on June 3 and 4 with two nights in Orlando.
As much as the Coachella festival in California last weekend received great reviews, promoters may have to pay fines for the late night performances. Headliner Paul McCartney played for an extra 54 minutes as fans kept calling for encores, while The Killers played an extra 30 minutes and The Cure exceeded their set time by 33 minutes. Under laws put in place by local authorities, promoters Goldenvoice are liable for a fine for every minute of music played after midnight, reports the BBC. The exact penalty is expected to be announced in a few weeks.
