After a controversial flip to "Jack," it appears that New Yorkers are not impressed with the new format on WCBS, which replaced the long-time Oldies station. The new WCBS made its debut in the Summer Arbitron ratings yesterday in 22nd place with a 1.5 rating. In the Spring book, the previous incarnation of WCBS had twice the ratings number (3.0) and landed in 12th place.
Speaking to the New York Post, Infinity Senior VP Les Hollander said, "We're certainly not happy with what has happened [but] we're hoping we've hit that down note and are on the way up. It takes a little while to break through, as it has with WNEW." Hollander also spoke to the New York Daily News, adding that "in the last 30 days, we saw the decline stop and some growth begin. That gives us something to build on."
The legendary "Cousin Brucie" Morrow, a displaced WCBS jock now with Sirius, also spoke to the Post, saying that New York listeners are "different" and can be "very unforgiving." He added, "I don't think they've seen the bottom yet. [The ratings] may go much lower."
In other New York ratings news, WLTW remained the top station overall, though WRKS moved ahead to first place among 25-54 year-olds. Howard Stern and News WINS-AM tied as the number one morning show in town.
Arbitron ratings for Los Angeles and Chicago were also released on Monday. KIIS "Kiss FM" remained number one for the second straight book. In Chicago, where Infinity flipped its Oldies station the same day as in New York, WJMK "Jack" fared better, coming in 16th place with a 2.3, but still slightly down from where the station was in its former format. News/Talk WGN, also the home of the Chicago Cubs, finished in first place. Despite the White Sox having a better season (and currently in the World Series), their home WMVP only saw a slight improvement.
