Bono and The Edge recently spoke to Rolling Stone about the Spider-Man musical that the U2 members have been writing songs for. "We were open to the idea of musical theater, but Spider-Man, that’s a different thing again, because that’s comic books, and there’s a whole series of relations between punk rock and rock bands and comic books, that goes back years," Bono says, adding that he and The Edge were excited "to mess with all these aspects of pop culture, put them in a blender and see what comes out on the other end." The Spidey musical, subtitled Turn Off The Dark, officially opens on February 18, 2010, with previews of the show starting a month earlier. Collective Soul
| Collective Soul will offer its Loud & Proud/Roadrunner Records debut album, Collective Soul (Rabbit), on August 25. The album was recorded at frontman Ed Roland’s Lake House studio and is self-produced. The first single, "Staring Down," shipped to Hot AC and Triple A radio formats on June 8, followed by the rocker "Welcome All Again," which will ship on July 6 to Rock formats. The band recently announced a co-headline summer tour with Gavin DeGraw, and another headlining tour will follow in August and September.
Just a little over a year since the release of Rising Down, The Roots are almost done with their eighth studio album, How I Got Over. The release is slated for a summer street date, and the band just filmed a video for the first single, "I Walk Alone." The Roots are potentially the hardest working band in Hip-Hop, as they are currently busy being the house band for the Late Night With Jimmy Fallon show, and they just held their second annual Roots Picnic in Philadelphia on Saturday, June 6. The Roots performed two sets to open and close the all-day festival, and they also performed the classic album It Takes A Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back with Public Enemy.
Yesterday, it was rumored that Billy Corgan had selected a new drummer to fill the sizeable drum stool of ex-Smashing Pumpkins member Jimmy Chamberlin. Now the band has confirmed that 19-year-old Mike Byrne has been recording demos with Corgan. An online posting says "Word from the studio is that Mike is an exceptionally talented and gifted drummer and things are going very well."After 19 Recordings inked deals with American Idol's latest winner and runner-up, Kris Allen and Adam Lambert, the company has also signed fourth-place finisher Allison Iraheta. Her recordings have been licensed to Jive Records. "I think I'm still in shock that this is happening — getting to record my first album and this whole awesome experience is a dream come true," says Iraheta. This summer she will be a part of the American Idols Live tour, starting July 5 in Portland, OR. Against Me! drummer Warren Oakes has left the Florida Punk band. While a recent blog post from band founder Tom Gabel infers that Oakes was fired, he told MTV News that it was a "really amicable" decision and still considers the other members of the band "more than friends - they're family." Oakes now plans on focusing on a burrito restaurant he recently opened back home in Gainesville.
