Quick Hits: Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Eminem, Teen Choice Awards, Limp Bizkit, White Stripes, Cat Stevens/Coldplay, Wu-Tang Clan, The Ventures
June 16, 2009

Mariah Carey's next album, Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel, has been scheduled for an August 25 release date, and the single "Obsessed" hit radio this afternoon. "Obsessed" was written and produced by Mariah, The-Dream and Tricky Stewart, who are responsible for the majority of the tracks on the new effort. Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel, the 12th studio album of Mariah’s career, is the follow-up to 2008's E=MC². Mariah recently sent out a Twitter message to fans saying, "The 1st single from my new album Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel is called 'Obsessed' and will be at radio next Tuesday. I'm a lil' exc... Seriously, this is one of my favorite songs ever. I love the whole album. I'm completely immersed in it. I can't wait for you to hear it."

Beyoncé has been confirmed to perform at this year's BET Awards, where she is nominated for five trophies. The awards will be broadcast live on June 28 from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, and Jamie Foxx will serve as the host. Other performers will include Kanye West, Maxwell, Young Jeezy, Ne-Yo and Soulja Boy. As previously reported, The-Dream, Jamie Foxx, Ryan Leslie, Ne-Yo and T-Pain will face off for Best Male R&B Artist, while Beyoncé, Keyshia Cole, Keri Hilson, Jennifer Hudson and Jazmine Sullivan will go head-to-head for Best Female R&B Artist. Other nominees include Best Male Rappers Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Rick Ross, T.I. and Young Jeezy, and Best Female Rappers Lil Mama, M.I.A. and Trina.

Eminem is planning to reunite his Detroit Rap crew, D12, and release the first new album from the group in five years. It would also be their first effort since the death of member Proof three years ago. "Me and the guys, we got a bond, it's special," Em said on BET's Rap City: The Relapse special on Friday. "It's like, as far as the future of D12, we're gonna be back in the studio soon."

Miley Cyrus leads the pack with 10 nominations for the 2009 Teen Choice Awards, with show hosts The Jonas Brothers behind her with nine. Green Day, Katy Perry (including her cat Kitty Purry!), Kanye West, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne, Beyoncé and Jason Mraz are among the many artists with multiple nominations. The Teen Choice Awards will be handed out on August 10 on Fox.

Limp Bizkit

The reunited Limp Bizkit made their live return at the U.K.'s Download festival over the weekend and said they are hoping to release a new album before the end of the year. "We're getting together our demos right now and we're going to go in and record them," stated frontman Fred Durst, according to NME.com. "I'm having a great feeling about going in and doing our record, more than I have about any of our albums before. It's not going to be a watered down version of Limp Bizkit, it's going to be a more explosive, more addictive, more driven version of Limp Bizkit."

The White Stripes' 2007 tour of Canada will be spotlighted in a new documentary about the band. During the tour, the Stripes played essentially in every Canadian province and territory, as well as unusual surprise gigs on a boat or at a school. Jack White told the CBC that "I don’t think we would wanna film ourselves like this. I’m pretty anti-reality television and all that ridiculous peeking behind the curtain sort of aspect of entertainment these days. But in this case, I don’t think it really has that ridiculousness to it. It does have an insight into some of the things that got created and how we went about making a tour like that happen."

Yusaf (the former Cat Stevens) has backed off initial criticism of Coldplay, claiming they had copied his song "Foreigner Suite" for their hit, "Viva La Vida." "I stand by what I said. They did copy my song but I don’t think they did it on purpose," Yusuf told the Daily Express. "I have even copied myself without even knowing I have done it. I’ll write down what I think is a good melody and realize it’s the same as something I have already done. I don’t want them to think I am angry with them. I’d love to sit down and have a cup of tea with them and let them know it’s okay."

Wu-Tang Clan will finally unleash Chamber Music on June 30 via E1 Music. The album pairs original Clan MCs with some Rap veterans. Chamber Music will feature verses from Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, RZA, U-God, Inspectah Deck and Killah Priest, alongside classic rappers such as AZ, Havoc (Mobb Deep), Cormega, Kool G Rap, Masta Ace, Sadat X (Brand Nubian) and Sean Price (Heltah Skeltah). "This album has a very live element of today's musicians playing the vibe of Wu-Tang," says RZA. "The vibe we would normally sample, the vibe of things that we would accumulate through old soul songs, jazz songs, kung fu movies, whatever, now you've got musicians that can play this vibe with Wu-Tang MCs rapping over it. The goal of this album is definitely paying homage to our early sound."

The Ventures guitarist and co-founder Bob Bogle has passed away at age 75. Don Wilson, the other co-founder of the Surf/Rock band, told The News Tribune of Tacoma that Bogle became ill over the weekend and died on Sunday. The Ventures were known for the hits "Walk, Don't Run," "Perfidia" and the theme from Hawaii Five-O. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.
