User-controlled Web radio service Jelli will team with CBS Radio and Modern Rock mainstay KITS (Live 105)/San Francisco, to allow listeners to take over the radio station for two hours on Sunday nights. The Jelli service is described as "community-powered, 100% user-controlled radio" and lets its users choose in real time what is played on the air. The service allows real time voting and other interactive features to rate songs, with each song determined by users just before it airs. The Jelli community can even vote to pull a song off the air instantly.
Jelli debuted live today with an online streaming version at www.jelli.net. "Our vision is to bring the power of the web to the airwaves by creating 100% user-controlled broadcasting," said Mike Dougherty, CEO and co-founder of Jelli. "Jelli empowers individuals and communities to control traditional broadcast programming in a real-time, continuous manner using the web. We are excited to launch with an amazing station like Live 105, and in the Bay Area which is home for so much web innovation."
The "Jelli" show will air on LIVE 105 Sunday nights from 10 p.m. to midnight and allow Web users to take real-time control of the programming of the station.
"Live 105 is known for our innovative programming, and we are excited to launch Jelli on Sunday nights and online," said Doug Harvill, SVP and Market Manager for CBS Radio-San Francisco. "Jelli provides the back-channel for the radio broadcast, enabling LIVE 105 to interact in new ways with our audience on a real-time basis."
"The real-time web represents a huge opportunity to engage with both online and traditional media audiences," Michael Marquez, EVP of Strategy & Corporate Development at CBS Interactive. "Jelli is creating a bridge between digital and traditional broadcast experiences, creating something completely new and fun."
"Over 234 million people tune in to the radio every week in the United States. We want to change the entire concept of what ‘traditional radio’ can be, via real-time web services, enabling new experiences, social web integrations and content possibilities," said Jateen Parekh, CTO and co-founder of Jelli. "Jelli helps traditional broadcasters convert active listeners into active web users, drive ratings and revenue, and access reporting about what their audience cares about."
Jelli uses an "innovative social automation platform," which combines radio automation capabilities with Web services to enable real-time control of radio infrastructure by online applications. This platform creates fully automated, highly targeted, "radio ready" programming which is format neutral and FCC & DMCA compliant. In addition to live 24/7 online and mobile streaming, Jelli can also transform traditional FM/AM/HD broadcast experiences with its partners around the country, enabling crowdsourced programming in their market.
