Quick Hits: Chris Brown, King Of Leon, Beck, Van Halen, Paul McCartney, Courtney Love, Angels & Airwaves, Sting, David Cook
June 18, 2009

The California Supreme Court has denied a request by Chris Brown's lawyer to delay the preliminary hearing in the singer's assault case that is scheduled for Monday, June 22. Brown’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, requested the delay so the defense could attain police records that may shed light on the leaked photo of Rihanna and her injuries. Geragos believes the photo will taint potential jury pools and prevent his client from having a fair trial. However, the judge ruled that Geragos must wait until 30 days before the start of the actual trial before requesting the LAPD files. Brown, who has pleaded not guilty in the case, is expected to appear at Monday's hearing, according to Reuters.

Kings Of Leon will launch their own record label imprint as part of a new deal with independent music publisher Bug Music. The first release via the band's yet-to-be-named venture is Some Kind Of Salvation by the Kings' former tourmates, The Features.

Beck

Beck has announced a new project called "Record Club," where he and other musicians will cover another artist's album in its entirety. The record will be recorded in one day with "nothing rehearsed or arranged ahead of time," with a song uploaded once a week on Beck.com and other artists' websites. Beck has already recorded a version of The Velvet Underground's seminal The Velvet Underground & Nico, with contributions from drummer Joey Waronker, producer Nigel Godrich, actor (and Beck's brother-in-law) Giovanni Ribisi and others. MGMT and Jamie Lidell are also expected to be a part of the Record Club experiment.

Van Halen is suing Nike over a similarity between Eddie Van Halen's iconic "Frankenstein" guitar and a new line of Nike's Dunk sneakers. In 2001, Van Halen copyrighted the crisscrossing red, black and white pattern on Eddie's guitar that fans are so familiar with. But now, the rubber trim on the side of the Nike Dunks features a red background with black and white crisscrosses. As a result, multiple reports say that Van Halen's company, ELVH, filed a cause of action for copyright infringement last Friday in a Los Angeles court. In a statement to Footwear News, Nike called the lawsuit baseless. "Based on the information provided to us, we have not infringed on any rights held by Mr. Van Halen," read the statement. "Nike's Dunk shoe design is not substantially similar to any of the Van Halen designs, and Nike has not referenced the 'Van Halen' name or image as part of any marketing campaign or promotional material associated with the shoe."

Paul McCartney will pen an original score for the animated feature High In The Clouds, an adaptation of a children's book he wrote with Geoff Dunbar and Philip Ardagh, according to Variety. The book, about a squirrel's quest to find an animal sanctuary, marks McCartney's largest involvement in an animated film since the Beatles frontman was part of 1968's Yellow Submarine.

In a new video interview with the NME, Courtney Love says her long-delayed album Nobody's Daughter is being re-worked into more of a Rock record, and therefore she plans to now release it as a Hole album. Love claims that ex-Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur will be recording some backing vocals for the songs, and the NME says she could tour with a new version of Hole in 2010. Love has also reportedly recruited guitarist Micko Larkin for the band. The entire ten-minute interview can be viewed below:

Even with the reunion of Blink-182, Tom DeLonge still has many plans for his band Angels & Airwaves. DeLonge tells Billboard he will release a free album/movie called Love by the end of 2009. DeLonge describes the project as "super conceptual and highbrow in many ways, very artistic, very Stanley Kubrick. But it's not a rock opera. It's a very modern version of what could happen when you blend the film industry and the music industry together in a very, very arty, kind of cool way with professionals involved all along the path."

Sting will release a new album, If On A Winter's Night..., on October 27. The record is a collection of interpretations of traditional and classic tunes, along with two of Sting's own compositions.

Former American Idol winner David Cook inks a new, long-term publishing deal with Cherry Lane Music Publishing Co. Cook has also extended his summer tour into late August, with dates up to the California State Fair in Sacramento on August 21.
