August 4, 2009

Britney Spears
Beyoncé and Lady Gaga lead the pack for the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, each receiving nine nominations today. Beyoncé was nominated for her smash hit "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)," while Gaga is up for awards for her clips for "Poker Face" and "Paparazzi."

Britney Spears was nominated seven times for the videos for "Womanizer" and "Circus." Also up for multiple awards are Jay-Z, Green Day, Coldplay, Kanye West and Eminem.

Nominees for Video of the Year are Beyoncé's "Single Ladies," "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga, Eminem's "We Made You," "Love Lockdown" by Kanye and Spears' "Womanizer." Competing for Best New Artist are Lady Gaga, Drake, 3OH!3, Kid Cudi and Asher Roth.

This year's nominees include a category of classic videos competing for "Best Video (That Should Have Won A Moonman)." The nominees from the past for this new award are: U2 - "Where The Streets Have No Name," Dr. Dre - "Nuthin' But A G Thang," Beastie Boys - "Sabotage," Bjork - "Human Behavior," Radiohead - "Karma Police," George Michael - "Freedom," Foo Fighters - "Everlong," Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - "Into The Great Wide Open," OK Go - "Here It Goes Again" and David Lee Roth - "California Girls."

Beyoncé said in a statement, "I'm excited and honored to be tied for most nominated for the VMAs. I’ve been blessed this year to have 'Single Ladies' become a video people really connected with and responded to. I've spent so much time watching all the great versions people created all around the world. It's beautiful to feel you touch people and bring a song to life with a video."

Lady Gaga stated, "After years of hustle in New York City, where we made our art videos in bars, myself and the Haus of Gaga are honored to receive nine nominations for the 2009 VMAs. We believe in the immensity and the promise of 'showbiz' and will continue to give it mouth-to-mouth, till its vomiting return. All you need is a camcorder, a flashlight, and one truly GREAT idea. Thank you MTV for being our video flagship, and for supporting this bunch of inspired kids, who love to get wasted and make art, together."

As previously announced, Russell Brand will host the VMAs, with Green Day, P!nk, Taylor Swift and Muse performing. The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, September 13 at 9 p.m.
