Alice In Chains | The new Alice In Chains album, Black Gives Way To Blue, does not come out until September 29, but fans can now stream all 11 songs at the site www.alice-in-chains.net. The CD was recorded with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Rush, Foo Fighters) at Dave Grohl's Studio 606 in Northridge, CA and also at Henson Studios in Hollywood. As previously reported, the members of Alice In Chains recently sat down for a candid talk with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich of Metallica for an FMQB Productions radio special, Inside Alice In Chains: Black Gives Way To Blue. The special is airing on radio stations nationwide between September 25 and 29, and the group talked very openly about moving on after the death of Layne Staley and writing songs with new singer William DuVall.
When Hetfield asked if DuVall and guitarist Jerry Cantrell write songs together, just as Cantrell and Staley did, the guitarist explained that they compose music both together and individually.
"In the beginning part of the band, I probably wrote a bit more. Layne definitely wrote great lyrics, and it was a really cool team," Cantrell said. "His contribution was pretty heavy, and he gave me a lot of inspiration to sing. I wrote a lot of stuff lyrically and Layne gave me more of a push out of the nest by saying, 'Why don’t you sing some of these things that are personal to you?' I like to sing and I like writing vocal melodies, but I didn’t really like to sing too much. I just wanted to sit on the side and play guitar and pipe up on a backup vocal once in a while. That’s what I felt comfortable doing. He gave me a lot of confidence to move forward, and on the other side of it, he started to play guitar more. Then he started to write songs like 'Hate To Feel' and 'Angry Chair,' so we both started to branch out a little bit, but it was something that we created together. That’s a big part of Alice’s sound. So the cool thing is, with William, although he’s a different person and we’re a different entity in the lineup that we have, the way that we go about doing things is still intact. It’s a new thing without a doubt, but there’s a lot of room for us to operate. We operate as a team like Layne and I operated vocally as a team too."
The group also talked about mixing together their heavy side with their acoustic side on the new CD. "We had a lot of material. I think we started with about 30 ideas that we weeded through, and took about 18 into the studio. Then 11 made the record," Cantrell explained. "It’s a cool thing, because it is a broader mix of a lot of things that we’ve done individually on records. We focused on the acoustic elements on both of the [band's previous] EPs, but there were also some acoustic elements on some of those [old] records too. But this one has a good blend of both."
