| Jay-Z, Ice Cube Honored At BET Hip-Hop Awards |
 |
October 12, 2009

Jay-Z | Over the weekend, the BET Hip-Hop Awards were held at Atlanta's Civic Center, although the ceremony won't air on BET until October 27. However, fans will have plenty to look forward to when the show finally airs. The event opened with a performance from Young Jeezy, who brought out surprise guest Jay-Z onstage with him for a rendition of "As Real As It Gets." Jay later took home the MVP of the Year award, beating out popular peers like Lil Wayne, Drake, T.I. and Kanye West. However, Drake did win Rookie Of The Year, and T.I., who is in prison on federal weapons charges, won the Best Collaboration award with Rihanna for "Live Your Life" and the Album of the Year award for Paper Trail.
T.I.'s fiancee, Tameka "Tiny" Cottle, accepted the awards on his behalf and read a letter by the rapper, who began serving a yearlong sentence in late May. "Although I'm not there with you all, I'm there in spirit," Cottle quoted the rapper as writing. "My road to redemption is almost over... Thanks for the support."
Ice Cube received the I Am Hip-Hop icon award, which was presented to him by Young Jeezy and his favorite Rapper, Chuck D. Cube said in his speech that he was humbled by the honor. "Without Chuck D, we'd be on a real bad collision course," he said in his speech, according to MTV News. The legendary MC also called for the hip-hop nation to do "what we feel" and encouraged old b-boys to "keep doing your music... As long as you got a tongue, you're not too old to rap."
Other notable moments came when Busta Rhymes presented and accepted the award for DJ of the Year to the late DJ AM, who died of an accidental drug overdose in August. Snoop Dogg showed up for multiple stage appearances and debuted his new record, "Gangsta Luv," with The-Dream, which transitioned into a finale of "Gin and Juice." And finally, the Goodie Mob reunion performance ended the night with high-energy renditions of their classics "Cell Therapy" and "Get Rich to This."
