Thursday night marked the first night of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame's 25th Anniversary concert at Madison Square Garden in New York, and things certainly got off to a grand start. Interesting collaborations were the theme of the night, as Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello joined Bruce Springsteen for a rousing electric version of "The Ghost of Tom Joad," and Stevie Wonder brought out John Legend for Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" as well as a tribute to Michael Jackson on "The Way You Make Me Feel."

Other stars on the night included Crosby, Stills and Nash, who ran through a set of their own hits and covers, bringing out contemporaries Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt and James Taylor for a few collaborations (such as Allman Brothers Band's "Midnight Rider" and "Teach Your Children"). Paul Simon kicked off his set with "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" and played many of his solo hits, but Art Garfunkel harmonized with him on their classics like "The Sound of Silence" and "The Boxer," according to MTV News. Simon also performed The Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun" for the late George Harrison, whom he called "a man who I truly loved and admired greatly."

Stevie Wonder delivered a hit-filled, star-studded performance that featured Smokey Robinson singing "The Tracks of My Tears" and B.B. King playing "The Thrill Is Gone." According to MTV, the evening's most surreal moment came when Wonder introduced Sting, who played bass and sang on a mash-up of Wonder's "Higher Ground" and The Police's "Roxanne."

The night ended with an epic set from Springsteen and the E Street Band. Following "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out," Springsteen dueted with John Fogerty and Darlene Love, played a cover of The Clash's "London Calling," and welcomed a surprise appearance from Billy Joel, who jammed on three songs including "New York State of Mind" and "Only the Good Die Young." The set closed with an all-inclusive grand finale of Jackie Wilson's "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher." It was well after 1 a.m. by the time Springsteen bid the crowd farewell, wrapping up a five-hour night of music.

Tonight's concert in New York will feature U2, Aretha Franklin, Metallica, Jeff Beck with special guest Billy Gibbons, and many other surprises. HBO will air the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame concert on November 29.
