| Beyoncé Scores Hat Trick At MTV Europe Awards |
 |
Novermber 6, 2009

Beyoncé | A number of American artists dominated the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) in Berlin last night, but none more so than Beyoncé. She won three EMA trophies, including Best Female, Best Song for "Halo" and Best Video for "Single Ladies." Eminem won the trophy for Best Male, while Green Day won Best Rock and Lady Gaga earned Best New Act. Linkin Park snagged the award for Best World Stage Performer, Placebo won for Best Alternative, and Best Group went to Tokio Hotel.
Two of the night's other winners, U2 and Jay-Z, performed a historic set at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate before the awards show to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Kicking off with "One," Bono thanked the crowd "for coming out in the cold" before wishing Berlin a happy birthday, reports the NME. U2 then brought out surprise guest Jay-Z for a rendition of "Sunday Bloody Sunday," which Jay rapped over. They then played a cover of Bob Marley's "Get Up, Stand Up" with the rapper, Bono and The Edge swapping verses, before U2 finished with "Beautiful Day," "Vertigo" and "Moment Of Surrender."
After their performance, U2 went on to win Best Live Act later that night, and Jay earned the trophy for Best Urban. The 2009 EMAs also featured live performances from Green Day, Leona Lewis, Foo Fighters, Shakira and more. Green Day opened the show, followed by host Katy Perry’s cabaret-style mash-up of the five Best Song contenders that included Beyoncé’s "Halo" and Kings of Leon’s "Use Somebody." Foo Fighters offered a high octane medley of "Wheels" and "All My Life," and Shakira steamed up the ceremony with her performance of "Did It Again."
