Carrie Underwood Climbs To The Top

The new album from Carrie Underwood, Play On, topped the sales chart this week as it sold 318,000 copies for a #1 debut, according to Nielsen SoundScan. This gives Underwood her second #1 album after 2007's Carnival Ride. Underwood's debut effort, Some Hearts, started at #2 when it was released. Play On is also the largest sales week for an album by a woman in 2009.

While Michael Jackson's This Is It held on the the #2 spot this week, Andrea Bocelli's My Christmas debuted at #3 with 149,000 copies sold, marking the singer's fifth Top 10 effort. Entering the chart at #4 is the first Glee TV soundtrack, which sold 113,000 copies, and the NOW 32 compilation starts at #5 with 102,000. The final debut in the Top 10 this week comes from Weezer with Raditude, which bows at #7 with 66,000 sold.

The rest of the Top 10 this week was filled out by Taylor Swift's Fearless at #6, Michael Buble's Crazy Love at #8, Sting's If On A Winter's Night at #9 and the Twilight: New Moon soundtrack at #10. The Foo Fighters new Greatest Hits package bowed at #11 with 44,000 units sold, and Metal veterans Slayer debuted at #12 by selling 41,000 copies of World Painted Blood.
